The one thing that stands out at Pó is its connection to the neighborhood and the environment. It has long ago shed its founding partner, celebrity chef Mario Batali, but it has retained and reinforced its core value that were started by partners Batali and Crane. These are respect for the environment, local sourcing of ingredients, and developing a close connection with the community. Produce come from surrounding vendors who often deliver on bicycle or even on foot and from Guy Jones at Blooming Hill Farms in the Hudson Valley.
The first time you visit you may want to try their tasting menu. For only $52 dollars it delivers a cornucopia of choices in a six-course meal. It is worth exploring especially since Executive Chef Lee McGrath is reinventing dishes on a regular basis. Don’t forget to ask for by-the-glass wine pairings from their knowledgable staff to enhance your experience.
Asked how Pó has survived the continuous competition from surrounding restaurants, who have come and gone over the years, owner Steve Crane answers that “Po is a neighborhood spot utilizing local purveyors, as well as hearty meals at a reasonable “family friendly” price. Being an owner and operator and making sure that we deliver a high quality of food, atmosphere and service consistently from the first day Pó opened and continues today, has allowed us to build a loyal following and always remain current. Therefore we never feel the “trends” or the “competition” around us, we have been successful in delivering a top quality product to our customers.”
Every dish at Pó is a delight to the senses but the Grilled Guinea Hen with roasted corn, scallions, fregula & saba was glorious! It simply melted in the mouth releasing layers upon layers of flavor. I would (and will) return to Pó simply to re-experience this delightful dish.
