The Wine Trust, headquartered in Ridgefield, Connecticut, is a world-class collector and steward of the finest Bordeaux wines. It is dedicated to continuing the standards of care and attention employed by the grape growers and vintners who cultivate and create these extraordinary wines.

Originally conceived as a private collection in the European tradition for the founding family in the early 1970s, The Wine Trust has consistently purchased only the most superlative wines en primeur, directly from long-established negotiants, and then applied exacting and comprehensive care to each bottle during its long maturation, to ensure the ideal conditions necessary for achievement of the highest level of enjoyment.

Today, wines from The Wine Trust Collection are recognized and sought after for their assured quality and pristine provenance by truly discerning retailers, restaurants, hotels and individuals with an appreciation for fine Bordeaux.

The vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild sit on the highest knoll of the Pauillac area. The vineyard was at one time owned by Alexander de Segue, proprietor of Châteaux Latour and Calon Segur. Lafite became public property in 1794, after the owner (the President of the Parliament of Guyana) had been guillotined in the Revolution. After the property changed hands a few more times, the Rothschild family acquired it at auction in 1868 and remain the owners today.

Robert M. Parker, Jr. on the 1988: “Extremely concentrated, with brilliantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward, yet impressively endowed Lafite-Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage!”

Provenance Revisited

Provenance and condition are two critically important factors when judging fine wines. While related to each other, they have two very distinctively different meanings.

Provenance relates to the history of ownership of a valued object or work of art or literature.

Condition relates to the state of physical fitness or readiness for use.

When applied to fine wine, wine that has come from an illustrious chateau or vineyard and that has been owned during its lifetime by a celebrated individual or organization, has the highest provenance and is valued accordingly.

Condition is the result of the care with which the wine has been stored, handled and shipped throughout its lifetime. Impeccable provenance is a strong precursor to ideal condition.

Finally, wine that is in its ideal condition and that has impeccable provenance is, of course, the most valuable wine.

The Wine Trust has, from its very beginnings, recognized the relationship between these two factors, seeking to consistently achieve and insure both characteristics in The Wine Trust Collection. Our list of very happy customers is the best evidence that we have succeeded.
