The Dozen - Chards & Sauvs

Remember when years ago someone wanted a glass of white wine for lunch, which automatically meant, “Pour me a glass of Chardonnay?”  Well, Chardonnay is still the top order, although in recent years Sauvignon Blanc has developed a large following as well.

We have both varieties in this edition of the Dozen – inexpensive and not so, from California and from France – the mother country – and made in different styles.

Waiter!

2018 Domaine de Bernier Val de Loire Chardonnay ($12). A somewhat fruity Chard with clean apple flavors.

2019 Chamisal Central Coast Stainless Chardonnay ($16). Quite enjoyable – juicy and spicy.

2019 Bonterra California Sauvignon Blanc ($19). Minty fresh flavors with good structure and acidity.

2018 Thierry et Pascale Matrot Bourgogne Blanc ($25). Apple and vanilla tastes that are not quite knit together.

2019 ZD Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($27). A very fruity and substantial Sauvignon with soft apple and minty flavors.

2017 Alma Rosa Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay ($35). Fruit-forward, but dry – tastes a lot like fresh grapes – and is long on the palate.

2019 Ram’s Gate Carneros Pinot Blanc ($38). Quite enjoyable, with lots of rambunctious fruity flavors and enough finishing acidity to tame them.

2019 Ram’s Gate Carneros Sauvignon Blanc ($38). An enjoyable and savory white with less emphasis on green fruitiness than on light spiciness and nutty flavors – very adaptable at the table.

2019 Ram’s Gate Sonoma Coast Rosé ($38). Also a very flexible table wine, with medium body and creamy strawberry flavors.

2018 MAN Coastal Region South African Pinotage ($13). Lots of cherry and spicy flavors, nicely textured, a little grapey in the finish.

2017 Mohua Central Otago Pinot Noir ($21). Fresh and pleasant, with light cherry flavors, but more like a Pinot Noir nouveau.

2017 Thierry et Pascale Matrot Bourgogne Rouge ($29). Fresh, with cherry/strawberry fruitiness, a little tangy, crisp finish.
