The Dozen - A Mixed Case

Sometimes there is no theme, no tune, just a random, happy humming.

That’s this week’s Dozen – a mixed case of countries (Chile, USA, Italy, Australia), blends and varietals (Merlot, Riesling, Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon) and prices (ranging from $10 to $80).

Self checkout is to the right.

2019 Veramonte Casablanca Valley Sauvignon Blanc Reserva ($12). Minty tart with lime and kiwi notes.

2018 Ritual Casablanca Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($16). A fragrant and juicy Sauvignon with medium body and some minerality.

2018 St. Urbans-Hof Nik Weis Wiltinger Kabinett Riesling ($19). Lovely combo of floral sweet fruitiness and a restraining tartness in the finish with some typical oiliness.

2019 DeLille Cellars “Chaleur Estate” Blanc ($36). Enjoyable, with apple and tropical fruit flavors – lively, yet full-bodied.

2018 Veramonte Colchagua Valley Carménère ($10). Very nice, with ripe purple fruit balanced with vegetal green notes and dusty tannins.

2019 Veramonte Casablanca Valley Pinot Noir Reserva ($12). Gamey cherries – enjoyable, but not “typical” Pinot flavors.

2017 DeLille Cellars “D2” Columbia Valley Red Wine ($41). Quite nice Merlot-dominated blend with firm dark cherry and blackberry flavors, smooth but not creamy with some fruit-skin notes.

2017 Midnight Cellars Willow Creek Merlot ($44). Bright fruit flavors and acidity with a toasty, fresh-oak finish.

2015 Frescobaldi Tenuta Perano “Rialzi” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione ($45). Elegant and light, and, as with so many Classicos, a great marriage of fruit and wood with the raspy trademark Sangiovese finish.

2017 Hickinbotham “The Revivalist” McLaren Vale Merlot ($63). Both big and complex – dark but not overly extracted fruit with a welcome finish of well-integrated oak.

2017 DeLille Cellars “Four Flags” Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($65). Great flavors of red and dark berries, but it could have more vibrancy and freshness.

2017 Seavey Napa Valley Merlot ($80). Quite nice – good intensity of cherry and blackberry flavors, well-structured and good depth of flavor with nicely-edged light bitters.
