The Weekly Dozen - The Joy of Drinking

Often we are thinking so much about the characteristics of wines that we forget the joy of just drinking all these marvelous creations.  From an everyday Rioja white and an everyday Sicilian red to a fabulous Chilean red blend and a lively Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, these are wines that all offer a great deal, albeit at different levels.

Pull cork, twist cap.

2018 El Coto Rioja Blanco ($11). Nice for the price – simple Viura fruit with a hint of cream and good balance.

2017 Tasca d’Almerita “Regaleali” Sicilia Bianco ($15). Lively and tart with green-fruit flavors.

2017 Bannister Alexander Valley Chardonnay ($32). A lean chardonnay with crisp apple flavors, good minerality and a touch of bitters.

2016 Ramey Fort Ross-Seaview Chardonany ($42). One of the delights of Ramey’s Chards is how they dance across the palate with a mixture of fresh yet ripe fruits, strands of vanilla bean, tin-cup minerality and crisp acidity.

2018 Tasca d’Almerita “Regaleali Le Rosé” Terre Siciliane IGT ($15). Little sweet, but lots of spritz and a crisp finish.

2018 Bonterra Mendocino County “Young Red” ($12). Pleasant, simple carafe wine – bright red fruit, slightly sweet but with good acidity.

2016 Tasca d’Almerita “Regaleali” Sicilia Nero d’Avola ($15). Enjoyable everyday red – dark cherry and blackberry fruit with light tannins.

2016 Frank Family Napa Valley Zinfandel ($35). Rich, dark berry flavors, long on the palate with smooth tannins.

2014 Vik “Milla Cala” Cachapoal Valley Red Wine ($39). Bordeaux varieties + Syrah with dominant cherry flavors, moderate barrel notes and flavorful tannins.

2015 Bannister “Campbell Ranch” Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($52). Leans toward the French style – beautiful ripe raspberries with a touch of crème, but there is also a pleasant tartness in the finish.

2016 Bannister “Lancel Creek” Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($60). Good, brightish fruit with a touch of bitters – lean, but not crisp in the finish.

2013 Vik Millahue Valley Red Wine ($150). Beautiful, vibrant red/purple fruit flavors with good structure and crisp finish – even better after decanting
