New Sweetwater Social to Open

Veteran Mixologists Tim Cooper (Goldbar) and Justin Noel (1534) have teamed up with Goldbar partners Shaun Rose and Udi Vaknin to open new subterranean lounge, Sweetwater Social on the corner of Bleecker and Broadway (643 Broadway).  Located beneath the recently opened Bleecker Kitchen & Co., Sweetwater Social will be an ode to New York with classic neighborhood themed cocktails in an entertaining yet classy rec room inspired space.

Fun, festive and flavorful are some words to describe the concept behind the recreational bar/lounge.  Good times will be had by all with activities such as foosball and shuffleboard while mixologists will serve up a seasonal selection of cocktails from over 300 spirits.  Small plates will be offered featuring twists on classics that pair well with the concoctions served up on the 30 foot bar.  The relaxed chill vibe will promote social mixology among guests promising a festive evening. Sweetwater Social will open March 12th.

Designed by Melissa Braiser and Nico Arze, the underground bar is meant to illicit memories of being in a childhood fantasy basement except this one is built for grown ups. “The original idea was to create a neighborhood sports bar but more refined,” Braiser explains. “Shuffleboard, foosball and board games paired with high-end cocktails.” The space offers a modern industrial style with an emphasis on handcraftsmanship. Elements of steel, aged brick and black and white subway-style tiles combine to create the desired laid back and approachable vibe. The designers have embraced imperfections in the hand cut tiles and hand welded steel fixtures, to create that cozy “at home” feeling. Notable features include a 20-foot communal table and original shuffleboard and foosball tables from Cooper’s very own childhood basement. Incandescent lighting provides a warm, golden glow further emphasizing a comfortable atmosphere.

The pride and joy of Sweetwater Social is the distinct cocktail program, a creative collaborative effort of Cooper & Noel, which has not been done before. The cocktail menu has been designed on a NYC subway map with each stop offering a cocktail reminiscent of that particular neighborhood. A preview of the cocktail list includes: Aqueduct Stop – “Day at the Races” with gin, 10 Tawny port, fresh lemon juice, cinnamon bark syrup, cranberry preserves, seasonal berry garnish over crushed ice; Delancey Stop/Bowery Stop – “Big Trouble, Little China” with toasted sesame infused bourbon, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, cucumber, salt tincture and club soda garnished with a cucumber slice; and Lincoln Center Stop – “Symphony” with apple brandy, mescal and Pedro Ximinez sherry.
